The YouthBridge Higher Education Access Program is designed to support ambitious students in navigating the journey from secondary school to international higher education. We provide mentorship, guidance, and resources to help students explore universities, submit competitive applications and secure life-changing opportunities. Whether you’re in your final year of secondary school or just starting to think about your future and explore your options, we’re here to support you with the information, skills, and guidance you need to succeed.

You don’t need to be the best student or have perfect grades to apply. We believe that everyone has potential and that it’s your enthusiasm, motivation, and willingness to learn that truly matter. If you’re passionate about continuing your education, we want to help you get there! And the best part? It is completely free to join! There are no costs for you to participate in this programme.

Help You Navigate University Applications – From choosing the right schools to filling out applications, we’ll guide you through every step of the process.

Connect You to Scholarship & Financial Aid Opportunities – We’ll help you research and apply for scholarships and funding to make your education possible.

Support You with Essay Writing & Personal Statements – Crafting a strong application essay is crucial. We’ll provide personalized feedback and coaching to make yours stand out.

Prepare You for Interviews & Entrance Exams – Whether it’s an admissions interview or an entrance exam, we’ll equip you with the confidence and skills to succeed.

Offer Mentorship & Career Guidance – Connect with professionals and university students who can advise, inspire, and support you in choosing the right path

Provide Resources & Workshops – Get access to practical resources, training sessions, and expert-led workshops on everything from university life to career exploration.

Build a Community of Aspiring Scholars – You won’t be alone! You’ll be part of a supportive network of students, mentors, and alumni working towards the same goal.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this program, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You are a secondary school student (in your final 2 years of school) or recent (within the last 12 months) secondary/high school graduate living in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
  • You are interested in pursuing higher education outside of Sierra Leone and need assistance with application processes, test preparation, or scholarship opportunities.
  • You show promise and enthusiasm for learning and self-improvement. This means that you may not necessarily be the top student or have perfect grades, but you have the drive, curiosity, and potential to excel with the right support and guidance. You demonstrate determination and the ability to push through challenges, even when things get tough.
  • You actively engage in extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs, volunteer work, or leadership roles, demonstrating your commitment to personal growth, teamwork, and community involvement.
  • You are committed to fully participating in and completing the program, including attending workshops and sessions, and engaging with program activities for the full duration of the 12-month program. The cohort will meet once a week, usually on Saturdays, for a few hours. Please do not apply if you will not be able to attend regularly.
  • If you are under 18, you must have the consent and support of your parent or guardian to apply and participate in the program.

The Higher Education Access Program helps students bridge the gap between secondary and higher education by providing knowledge, skills, and personalized guidance to access international educational opportunities.

2. Who is eligible to apply for the program?

The program is open to senior secondary school students (in SSS 1, 2 or 3) or recent (within the last 12 months) secondary school graduates living in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

3. Is the program only for students interested in studying abroad?

Yes, the program only supports students interested in international education opportunities that align with YouthBridge’s mission.

4. What are the benefits of participating in the program?

Students gain access to tailored guidance, mentorship, support with applications, interview prep, and resources for pursuing their academic goals.

5. Is there a cost to join the program?

Participation in the program is free, but students may need to cover external costs such as application fees or exam registration if applicable. 

6. What is the program duration?

The program duration is 12 months, aligning with application timelines and offering ongoing support throughout the process. 

7. What is the application process for joining the program?

Interested students need to submit an application form, and shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview. 

8. What kind of support will students receive during the program?

Students receive mentorship, essay writing support, mock interviews, test prep guidance, and help with school and scholarship applications. The program provides a mix of one-on-one mentorship and group workshops to ensure personalized and collaborative learning.

9. Does the program assist with selecting universities or programs?

Yes, we help students identify universities and programs that align with their academic and career aspirations, as well as support with writing application essays and personal statements.

10. Will the program assist with interview preparation for universities?

Yes, students will receive training and participate in mock interviews to build their confidence and communication skills.

11. Does the program help with standardized test preparation (e.g., SAT, WASSCE, A-Levels)?

We provide guidance, resources, and strategies to support students in their test preparation journey. However, we do not administer tests or offer test prep classes directly.

12. Will students receive guidance on building a strong extracurricular profile?

Yes, we help students identify ways to showcase their skills, leadership, and community involvement to strengthen their applications.

13. Can the program help students who haven’t decided on a career path yet?

Definitely. Our mentors work with students to explore their interests and help them identify potential academic and career paths.

14. Does the program provide financial aid or scholarships to cover tuition?

The program itself does not provide funding, but we provide resources and assistance to help students identify and apply for scholarships and financial aid opportunities.

15. What universities or countries does the program focus on?

The program focuses on pre-college programs and universities across Africa, the UK, the US, and potentially other international destinations, depending on student preferences.

16. Are students guaranteed admission to universities after completing the program?

No. While we provide extensive support, admission decisions are ultimately made by the universities. It is up to students to put their best foot forward.

17. Is the program open to students outside of Sierra Leone?

Currently, only students residing in Freetown, Sierra Leone are eligible to apply, but future plans include expansion to other locations.

18. How are sessions conducted – in person or online?

Sessions are conducted in a hybrid format, combining in-person workshops and online sessions to accommodate various needs.

19. What happens if a student cannot attend a session?

We provide recorded sessions or catch-up opportunities to ensure students don’t miss out on key content. However, students should try to attend as many sessions as possible to get the most from this program.

20. Are there any specific resources provided?

Yes, students receive curated materials, including application and scholarship guides, and other resources.

21. How can parents support their children in the program?

Parents can stay informed, encourage their children to participate actively, and help them meet deadlines.

22. Are there sessions or resources for parents to better understand the higher education process?

Yes, we host informational sessions and provide guides to help parents navigate the education process alongside their children.

23. Will parents be updated on their child’s progress in the program?

Yes, we share updates and provide opportunities for parents to engage with the program.

24. What kind of support will students receive after they complete the program?

We continue to provide guidance on transitioning to university life and staying connected through our alumni network.

25. Does the program assist with visa applications and travel arrangements?

Yes, we guide students through visa application processes and provide advice on travel logistics, on a case-by-case basis.
